Linux Kernel up to 2.4.33.3 UDF File resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

CVE summarizes:

The Universal Disk Format (UDF) filesystem driver in Linux kernel 2.6.17 and earlier allows local users to cause a denial of service (hang and crash) via certain operations involving truncated files, as demonstrated via the dd command.

The weakness was released 09/01/2006 by Colin (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4145 since 08/15/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33581 (RHEL 4 : kernel (RHSA-2008:0665)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165110 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:079)).

Upgrading to version 2.4.33.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
