This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Tasks Switching. The manipulation as part of a EFLAGS leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Linux kernel does not properly save or restore EFLAGS during a context switch, or reset the flags when creating new threads, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (process crash), as demonstrated using a process that sets the Alignment Check flag (EFLAGS 0x40000), which triggers a SIGBUS in other processes that have an unaligned access.
The bug was discovered 09/18/2006. The weakness was disclosed 12/14/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5173 since 10/05/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24619 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2007:002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165110 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2006:079)).
