Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.17.10 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function nlmclnt_mark_reclaim of the component NFS lockd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The nlmclnt_mark_reclaim in clntlock.c in NFS lockd in Linux kernel before 2.6.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (process crash) and deny access to NFS exports via unspecified vectors that trigger a kernel oops (null dereference) and a deadlock.
The weakness was released 12/14/2006 by Matthias Andree (ryan) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5158 since 10/03/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67520 (Oracle Linux 4 : kernel (ELSA-2007-0488)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156118 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2007-0488)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org.
