Details
A vulnerability was found in Symantec Veritas Netbackup up to 6.0 (Backup Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file bpcd.exe. The manipulation of the argument CONNECT_OPTIONS with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the NetBackup bpcd daemon (bpcd.exe) in Symantec Veritas NetBackup 5.0 before 5.0_MP7, 5.1 before 5.1_MP6, and 6.0 before 6.0_MP4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long CONNECT_OPTIONS request, a different issue than CVE-2006-6222.
The bug was discovered 12/13/2006. The weakness was published 12/14/2006 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5822 since 11/08/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38569 (Symantec Veritas NetBackup Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seer.support.veritas.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9813. In this case the pattern CONNECT_OPTIONS= is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11809.
