Symantec Veritas Netbackup up to 6.0 bpcd.exe len stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Symantec Veritas Netbackup up to 6.0 (Backup Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file bpcd.exe. The manipulation of the argument len with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the NetBackup bpcd daemon (bpcd.exe) in Symantec Veritas NetBackup 5.0 before 5.0_MP7, 5.1 before 5.1_MP6, and 6.0 before 6.0_MP4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long request with a malformed length prefix.

The bug was discovered 12/13/2006. The weakness was shared 12/14/2006 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6222 since 12/01/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38569 (Symantec Veritas NetBackup Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seer.support.veritas.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11809.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30882), SecurityFocus (BID 21565†), OSVDB (31335†), Secunia (SA23368†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017379†). The entries VDB-2750 and VDB-2748 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
