The NetBackup bpcd daemon (bpcd.exe) in Symantec Veritas NetBackup 5.0 before 5.0_MP7, 5.1 before 5.1_MP6, and 6.0 before 6.0_MP4 does not properly check for chained commands, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by appending malicious commands to valid commands.

The weakness was presented 12/14/2006 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4902 since 09/20/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seer.support.veritas.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10130.
