A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Symantec Veritas Netbackup up to 6.0 (Backup Software). Affected is an unknown code of the file bpcd.exe. The NetBackup bpcd daemon (bpcd.exe) in Symantec Veritas NetBackup 5.0 before 5.0_MP7, 5.1 before 5.1_MP6, and 6.0 before 6.0_MP4 does not properly check for chained commands, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands by appending malicious commands to valid commands.
The weakness was presented 12/14/2006 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityresponse.symantec.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-4902 since 09/20/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seer.support.veritas.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10130. In this case the pattern |00 18 00 1B 00 02| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11809.
