GNU GDB 6.5 DWARF/DWARF2 Information memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU GDB 6.5. This affects an unknown function of the component DWARF/DWARF2 Information Handler. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4146. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in GNU GDB 6.5 (Programming Tool Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component DWARF/DWARF2 Information Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the (1) DWARF (dwarfread.c) and (2) DWARF2 (dwarf2read.c) debugging code in GNU Debugger (GDB) 6.5 allows user-assisted attackers, or restricted users, to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file with a location block (DW_FORM_block) that contains a large number of operations.

The bug was discovered 08/31/2006. The weakness was published 09/01/2006 by Will Drewry with Google Security Team as Bug 204845 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4146 since 08/15/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67518 (Oracle Linux 3 : gdb (ELSA-2007-0469)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156116 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for GDB (ELSA-2007-0469)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gnu.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28773), Tenable (67518), SecurityFocus (BID 19802†), OSVDB (28318†) and Secunia (SA25934†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
