A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ISS BlackICE PC Protection up to 3.6 cpiE. Affected by this issue is the function NtOpenSection of the file RapDrv.sys. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
RapDrv.sys in BlackICE PC Protection 3.6.cpn, cpj, cpiE, and possibly 3.6 and earlier, allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via a NULL third argument to the NtOpenSection API function. NOTE: it was later reported that 3.6.cqn is also affected.
The weakness was shared 09/01/2006 by David Matousek (Website). The advisory is shared for download at matousec.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-4541 since 09/05/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ZIP Archive. The exploit is available at matousec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at iss.net. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.
