A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in fetchmail 6.2.0/6.2.5/6.2.5.2. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. fetchmailconf before 1.49 in fetchmail 6.2.0, 6.2.5 and 6.2.5.2 creates configuration files with insecure world-readable permissions, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information such as passwords.
The bug was discovered 10/21/2005. The weakness was shared 10/21/2005 by Thomas Wolff (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3088 since 09/28/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21503 (FreeBSD : fetchmail -- fetchmailconf local password exposure (baf74e0b-497a-11da-a4f4-0060084a00e5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115383 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-08-01)).
Upgrading to version 1.49 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
