IBM Lotus Domino up to 7.0.2 tunekrnl memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in IBM Lotus Domino up to 7.0.2 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component tunekrnl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in tunekrnl in IBM Lotus Domino 6.x before 6.5.5 FP2 and 7.x before 7.0.2 allow local users to gain privileges and execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 08/15/2006. The weakness was presented 11/09/2006 by Andrew Christensen with FortConsult (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5818 since 11/08/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at d2sec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 85 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74221 (IBM Lotus Domino Multiple TuneKrnl Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 6.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30151), SecurityFocus (BID 20967†), OSVDB (30247†), Secunia (SA22724†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017198†). See VDB-458, VDB-992, VDB-1454 and VDB-2995 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
