Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GNU GNUMP3D up to 2.9.5. Affected is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in GNUMP3D before 2.9.6 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via crafted sequences such as "/.//..//////././", which is collapsed into "/.././" after ".." and "//" sequences are removed.
The bug was discovered 10/28/2005. The weakness was published 10/28/2005 by Steve Kemp (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3123 since 10/03/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20155 (GLSA-200511-05 : GNUMP3d: Directory traversal and XSS vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 2.9.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
