phpBB up to 2.0.17 get/post/cookie GPC cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in phpBB (Forum Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file get/post/cookie. The manipulation of the argument GPC with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

phpBB 2.0.17 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass protection mechanisms that deregister global variables by setting both a GET/POST/COOKIE (GPC) variable and a GLOBALS[] variable with the same name, which causes phpBB to unset the GLOBALS[] variable but not the GPC variable.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2005. The weakness was released 10/31/2005 by Stefan Esser with Hardened-PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared at hardened-php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-3415 since 11/01/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 78 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20132 (phpBB <= 2.0.17 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22914), Tenable (20132), SecurityFocus (BID 15243†), OSVDB (20386†) and Secunia (SA17366†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-26766, VDB-26765, VDB-26764 and VDB-26763.
