Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GNU libpng (Image Processing Software). This affects the function png_set_sPLT of the file pngset.c of the component PNG Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The sPLT chunk handling code (png_set_sPLT function in pngset.c) in libpng 1.0.6 through 1.2.12 uses a sizeof operator on the wrong data type, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via malformed sPLT chunks that trigger an out-of-bounds read.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2006. The weakness was released 11/15/2006 by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) with Gentoo Linux Security Auditing Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-5793 since 11/08/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67500 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : libpng (ELSA-2007-0356)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156100 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for libpng (ELSA-2007-0356)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at libpng.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30290), Tenable (67500), SecurityFocus (BID 21078†), OSVDB (30398†) and Secunia (SA25742†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-3084. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
