io-xpm.c in the gdk-pixbuf XPM image rendering library in GTK+ before 2.8.7 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted XPM image with a large number of colors.
The bug was discovered 11/16/2005. The weakness was released 11/18/2005 by Ludwig Nussel (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2975 since 09/19/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20634 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 / 5.10 : gtk+2.0, gdk-pixbuf vulnerabilities (USN-216-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117803 (CentOS Security Update for gtk2 (CESA-2005:811)).
Upgrading to version 2.8.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
