Details
A vulnerability was found in GTK GTK+ 2.4.0. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component gdk-pixbuf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the GTK+ gdk-pixbuf XPM image rendering library in GTK+ 2.4.0 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via an XPM file with a number of colors that causes insufficient memory to be allocated, which leads to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 11/16/2005. The weakness was presented 11/18/2005 by infamous41md (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-3186 since 10/12/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20230 (Fedora Core 3 : gdk-pixbuf-0.22.0-16.fc3.3 (2005-1086)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117803 (CentOS Security Update for gtk2 (CESA-2005:811)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23083), Tenable (20230), SecurityFocus (BID 15435†), OSVDB (20840†) and Secunia (SA17522†).
