Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code in the library dunzip32.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in DUNZIP32.DLL for RealPlayer 8, 10, and 10.5 and RealOne Player 1 and 2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RealPlayer Skin (RJS) file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2004-1094.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2005. The weakness was released 11/10/2005 by Fang Xing (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security (Website). The advisory is shared at eeye.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2630 since 08/19/2005. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20184 (RealPlayer for Windows Multiple Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115301 (RealPlayer Multiple Vulnerabilities (November 2005)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11730.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23869), Tenable (20184), SecurityFocus (BID 15382†), OSVDB (18827†) and Secunia (SA17514†).
