The exif_read_data function in the Exif module in PHP before 4.4.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a malformed JPEG image.

The weakness was disclosed 11/18/2005 with Redhat (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3353. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20206 (RHEL 3 / 4 : php (RHSA-2005:831)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
