A vulnerability has been found in Google Mini Search Appliance (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument proxystylesheet with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Google Mini Search Appliance, and possibly Google Search Appliance, allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary Javascript, and possibly other web script or HTML, via the proxystylesheet variable, which will be executed in the resulting error message.
The bug was discovered 06/10/2005. The weakness was released 11/21/2005 by H D Moore with MetaSploit (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at metasploit.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-3754 since 11/22/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 163 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20241 (Google Search Appliance proxystylesheet Parameter Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (XSS, Code Exec, ID)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 62052 (Google Mini Search Appliance Multiple Vulnerabilities).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3948.
