Google Mini Search Appliance Error Message proxystylesheet path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Google Mini Search Appliance. Impacted is an unknown function of the component Error Message Handler. Such manipulation of the argument proxystylesheet leads to path traversal. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-3755. Moreover, an exploit is present.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Mini Search Appliance (unknown version) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument proxystylesheet with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Google Mini Search Appliance, and possibly Google Search Appliance, allows remote attackers to determine the existence of arbitrary files via a relative path from a style sheet directory, then comparing the resulting error messages.

The bug was discovered 06/10/2005. The weakness was disclosed 11/21/2005 by H D Moore with MetaSploit (Website). The advisory is shared for download at metasploit.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3755 since 11/22/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 163 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20241 (Google Search Appliance proxystylesheet Parameter Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (XSS, Code Exec, ID)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3948.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23279), Tenable (20241), SecurityFocus (BID 15509†), OSVDB (20977†) and Secunia (SA17644†). The entries VDB-27035, VDB-27034, VDB-27033 and VDB-27031 are pretty similar. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
