Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.10 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function fcntl_setlease of the file locks.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Memory leak in the VFS file lease handling in locks.c in Linux kernels 2.6.10 to 2.6.15 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion) via certain Samba activities that cause an fasync entry to be re-allocated by the fcntl_setlease function after the fasync queue has already been cleaned by the locks_delete_lock function.
The bug was discovered 11/29/2005. The weakness was published 11/25/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3807 since 11/25/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 336 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20775 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 / 5.10 : linux-source-2.6.8.1/-2.6.10/-2.6.12 vulnerabilities (USN-231-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
