Details
A vulnerability was found in Webmin 1.1.60/1.2.40 (Software Management Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the file miniserv.pl of the component Login Form. The manipulation of the argument username with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Format string vulnerability in miniserv.pl Perl web server in Webmin before 1.250 and Usermin before 1.180, with syslog logging enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash or memory consumption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in the username parameter to the login form, which is ultimately used in a syslog call. NOTE: the code execution might be associated with an issue in Perl.
The bug was discovered 11/29/2005. The weakness was released 11/30/2005 by Steven M. Christey as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-3912 since 11/30/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20454 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : webmin (MDKSA-2005:223)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11887 (Webmin prior to 1.500 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.250 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4019.
