The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-6385. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Intel Pro Adapter up to 9.x. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in Intel PRO 10/100, PRO/1000, and PRO/10GbE PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe network adapter drivers (aka NDIS miniport drivers) before 20061205 allows local users to execute arbitrary code with "kernel-level" privileges via an incorrect function call in certain OID handlers.
The bug was discovered 12/05/2006. The weakness was shared 12/06/2006 by eEye Digital Security with eEye Digital Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at intel.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6385 since 12/07/2006. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43126 (Intel Network Drivers Local Code Execution Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at intel.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30750), SecurityFocus (BID 21456†), OSVDB (31788†), Secunia (SA23221†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017346†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
