Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Lyris List Manager up to 8.9a. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument orderby with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Lyris ListManager 5.0 through 8.9a allows remote attackers to add "ORDER BY" columns to SQL queries via unusual whitespace characters in the orderby parameter, such as (1) newlines and (2) 0xFF (ASCII 255) characters, which are interpreted as whitespace.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2005. The weakness was released 12/08/2005 by H D Moore (Website). The advisory is shared for download at metasploit.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-4144 since 12/10/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl Module and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 170 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20294 (ListManager < 8.9b Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
