A vulnerability was found in Sophos Anti-Virus 2.3 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block of the component SIT Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Multiple buffer overflows in Sophos Anti-Virus scanning engine before 2.40 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a SIT archive with a long filename that is not null-terminated, which triggers a heap-based overflow in veex.dll due to improper length calculation, and (2) a CPIO archive, with a long filename that is not null-terminated, which triggers a stack-based overflow in veex.dll.

The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2006 with ZDI (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6335 since 12/06/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sophos.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
