Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 ld.so path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file ld.so. This manipulation causes path traversal. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2006-6494. There is no available exploit. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file ld.so. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in ld.so.1 in Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via a .. (dot dot) sequence in the LANG environment variable that points to a locale file containing attacker-controlled format string specifiers.

The bug was discovered 12/12/2006. The weakness was presented 12/13/2006 by Sean Larsson with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6494 since 12/12/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115701 (Sun Solaris ld.so.1(1) Directory Traversal Vulnerability (1001294.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30849), SecurityFocus (BID 21564†), OSVDB (30843†), Secunia (SA23317†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017376†). See VDB-2744 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
