Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 ld.so doprf stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 8.0/9.0/10.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function doprf of the file ld.so. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in ld.so.1 in Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 allows local users to execute arbitrary code via large precision padding values in a format string specifier in the format parameter of the doprf function. NOTE: this issue normally does not cross privilege boundaries, except in cases of external introduction of malicious message files, or if it is leveraged with other vulnerabilities such as CVE-2006-6494.

The bug was discovered 12/12/2006. The weakness was shared 12/13/2006 by Sean Larsson with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-6495 since 12/12/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115701 (Sun Solaris ld.so.1(1) Directory Traversal Vulnerability (1001294.1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 21564†), OSVDB (30842†), Secunia (SA23317†), SecurityTracker (ID 1017376†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-13313†).
