Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenLDAP up to 2.3.x (Directory Service Software). This affects the function krbv4_ldap_auth of the component LDAP Authentication. The manipulation as part of a Long Credentials leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the krbv4_ldap_auth function in servers/slapd/kerberos.c in OpenLDAP 2.4.3 and earlier, when OpenLDAP is compiled with the --enable-kbind (Kerberos KBIND) option, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an LDAP bind request using the LDAP_AUTH_KRBV41 authentication method and long credential data.
The weakness was published 12/13/2006 by Solar Eclipse (Website). The advisory is shared at phreedom.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-6493 since 12/12/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Solar Eclipse in C and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at phreedom.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openldap.org.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (2933), OSVDB (31522†) and Secunia (SA23334†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
