Linux Kernel up to 5.4.229/5.10.164/5.15.89/6.1.7 fastrpc creater_process reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Such manipulation leads to reference count. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-48873. No exploit exists. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.229/5.10.164/5.15.89/6.1.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function creater_process of the component fastrpc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: misc: fastrpc: Don't remove map on creater_process and device_release Do not remove the map from the list on error path in fastrpc_init_create_process, instead call fastrpc_map_put, to avoid use-after-free. Do not remove it on fastrpc_device_release either, call fastrpc_map_put instead. The fastrpc_free_map is the only proper place to remove the map. This is called only after the reference count is 0.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-48873 since 07/16/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207959 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3499-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.230, 5.10.165, 5.15.90 or 6.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4b5c44e924a5/193cd853145b/1b7b7bb400dd/35ddd482345c/5bb96c8f9268 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207959) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1888). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
