Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.7. This affects the function fastrpc_map_find. The manipulation of the argument take_ref with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: misc: fastrpc: Fix use-after-free and race in fastrpc_map_find Currently, there is a race window between the point when the mutex is unlocked in fastrpc_map_lookup and the reference count increasing (fastrpc_map_get) in fastrpc_map_find, which can also lead to use-after-free. So lets merge fastrpc_map_find into fastrpc_map_lookup which allows us to both protect the maps list by also taking the &fl->lock spinlock and the reference count, since the spinlock will be released only after. Add take_ref argument to make this suitable for all callers.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-48874 since 07/16/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 247780 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-48874), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a50c5c25b6e7/9446fa1683a7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
