Linux Kernel up to 5.4.181/5.10.102/5.15.25/5.16.11 nfp_tunnel_add_shared_mac memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.181/5.10.102/5.15.25/5.16.11. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function nfp_tunnel_add_shared_mac. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nfp: flower: Fix a potential leak in nfp_tunnel_add_shared_mac() ida_simple_get() returns an id between min (0) and max (NFP_MAX_MAC_INDEX) inclusive. So NFP_MAX_MAC_INDEX (0xff) is a valid id. In order for the error handling path to work correctly, the 'invalid' value for 'ida_idx' should not be in the 0..NFP_MAX_MAC_INDEX range, inclusive. So set it to -1.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-48934 since 08/21/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.4.182, 5.10.103, 5.15.26 or 5.16.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5ad5886f85b6/af4bc921d39d/9d8097caa732/4086d2433576/3a14d0888eb4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
