Summary
A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.102/5.15.25/5.16.11. This impacts an unknown function of the component CDC-NCM. This manipulation causes buffer overflow. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2022-48938. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.102/5.15.25/5.16.11. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component CDC-NCM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: CDC-NCM: avoid overflow in sanity checking A broken device may give an extreme offset like 0xFFF0 and a reasonable length for a fragment. In the sanity check as formulated now, this will create an integer overflow, defeating the sanity check. Both offset and offset + len need to be checked in such a manner that no overflow can occur. And those quantities should be unsigned.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-48938 since 08/22/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/20/2024).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211624 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7121-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.10.103, 5.15.26 or 5.16.12 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 69560efa0013/49909c9f8458/7b737e47b875/8d2b1a1ec9f5 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (211624). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
