A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (version now known) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ctl_request_sense. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The ctl_request_sense function could expose up to three bytes of the kernel heap to userspace. Malicious software running in a guest VM that exposes virtio_scsi can exploit the vulnerabilities to achieve code execution on the host in the bhyve userspace process, which typically runs as root. Note that bhyve runs in a Capsicum sandbox, so malicious code is constrained by the capabilities available to the bhyve process. A malicious iSCSI initiator could achieve remote code execution on the iSCSI target host.
The weakness was released by Synacktiv. It is possible to read the advisory at security.freebsd.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-43110 since 08/27/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
