Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FreeBSD. The affected element is the function ctl_write_buffer. The manipulation results in use after free. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2024-45063. No exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (version unknown). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function ctl_write_buffer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The function ctl_write_buffer incorrectly set a flag which resulted in a kernel Use-After-Free when a command finished processing. Malicious software running in a guest VM that exposes virtio_scsi can exploit the vulnerabilities to achieve code execution on the host in the bhyve userspace process, which typically runs as root. Note that bhyve runs in a Capsicum sandbox, so malicious code is constrained by the capabilities available to the bhyve process. A malicious iSCSI initiator could achieve remote code execution on the iSCSI target host.

The weakness was disclosed by Synacktiv. The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-45063 since 08/27/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/05/2025).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2024-41291). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
