FreeBSD ctl_write_buffer/ctl_read_buffer uninitialized resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in FreeBSD. The impacted element is the function ctl_write_buffer/ctl_read_buffer. This manipulation causes uninitialized resource. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2024-8178. There is no available exploit. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ctl_write_buffer/ctl_read_buffer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ctl_write_buffer and ctl_read_buffer functions allocated memory to be returned to userspace, without initializing it. Malicious software running in a guest VM that exposes virtio_scsi can exploit the vulnerabilities to achieve code execution on the host in the bhyve userspace process, which typically runs as root. Note that bhyve runs in a Capsicum sandbox, so malicious code is constrained by the capabilities available to the bhyve process. A malicious iSCSI initiator could achieve remote code execution on the iSCSI target host.

The weakness was presented by Synacktiv. The advisory is shared at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-8178 since 08/26/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/05/2025).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2024-49000). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
