Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in pillarjs path-to-regexp up to 0.1.9. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redos vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-1333. The product uses a regular expression with an inefficient, possibly exponential worst-case computational complexity that consumes excessive CPU cycles. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
path-to-regexp turns path strings into a regular expressions. In certain cases, path-to-regexp will output a regular expression that can be exploited to cause poor performance. Because JavaScript is single threaded and regex matching runs on the main thread, poor performance will block the event loop and lead to a DoS. The bad regular expression is generated any time you have two parameters within a single segment, separated by something that is not a period (.). For users of 0.1, upgrade to 0.1.10. All other users should upgrade to 8.0.0.
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-45296 since 08/26/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1449.003 for this issue.
