Sun Java JRE up to 5.0 Update 8 Input Array stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Sun Java JRE up to 5.0 Update 8. This impacts an unknown function of the component Input Array Handler. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2006-6731. Additionally, an exploit exists. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Sun Java JRE up to 5.0 Update 8 (Programming Language Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Input Array Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in Sun Java Development Kit (JDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7 and earlier, Java System Development Kit (SDK) and JRE 1.4.2_12 and earlier 1.4.x versions, and SDK and JRE 1.3.1_18 and earlier allow attackers to develop Java applets that read, write, or execute local files, possibly related to (1) integer overflows in the Java_sun_awt_image_ImagingLib_convolveBI, awt_parseRaster, and awt_parseColorModel functions; (2) a stack overflow in the Java_sun_awt_image_ImagingLib_lookupByteRaster function; and (3) improper handling of certain negative values in the Java_sun_font_SunLayoutEngine_nativeLayout function. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was released 12/20/2006 by Chris Evans with Google Chrome Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-6731 since 12/26/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at scary.beasts.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25341 (GLSA-200705-20 : Blackdown Java: Applet privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165094 (SUSE Security Update for Sun Java (SUSE-SA:2007:003)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at java.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (25341), SecurityFocus (BID 21675†), OSVDB (32934†), Secunia (SA25404†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017425†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2780, VDB-2784, VDB-2782 and VDB-34021.
