The CCITTFaxStream::CCITTFaxStream function in Stream.cc for xpdf, gpdf, kpdf, pdftohtml, poppler, teTeX, CUPS, libextractor, and others allows attackers to corrupt the heap via negative or large integers in a CCITTFaxDecode stream, which lead to integer overflows and integer underflows.
The bug was discovered 01/03/2006. The weakness was released 12/31/2005 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3624 since 11/16/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20482 (RHEL 4 : gpdf (RHSA-2006:0177)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117788 (CentOS Security Update for kdegraphics (CESA-2005:868)).
