Details
A vulnerability was found in PLANET Technology GS-4210-24PL4C Hardware 2.0 and GS-4210-24P2S Hardware 3.0 (version now known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown processing of the component Configuration File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak hash vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-328. The product uses an algorithm that produces a digest (output value) that does not meet security expectations for a hash function that allows an adversary to reasonably determine the original input (preimage attack), find another input that can produce the same hash (2nd preimage attack), or find multiple inputs that evaluate to the same hash (birthday attack). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Certain switch models from PLANET Technology use an insecure hashing function to hash user passwords without being salted. Remote attackers with administrator privileges can read configuration files to obtain the hash values, and potentially crack them to retrieve the plaintext passwords.
The advisory is shared for download at twcert.org.tw. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-8453 since 09/05/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
