Details
A vulnerability was found in PLANET Technology GS-4210-24PL4C Hardware 2.0, GS-4210-24P2S Hardware 3.0 and IGS-5225-4UP1T2S Hardware 1.0 (version unknown). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component swctrl Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak password encoding vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-261. Obscuring a password with a trivial encoding does not protect the password. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The swctrl service is used to detect and remotely manage PLANET Technology devices. For certain switch models, the authentication tokens used during communication with this service are encoded user passwords. Due to insufficient strength, unauthorized remote attackers who intercept the packets can directly crack them to obtain plaintext passwords.
The advisory is shared at twcert.org.tw. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-8455 since 09/05/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely.
