Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2005-3706. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in LibSystem in Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.5 allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code by causing an application that uses LibSystem to request a large amount of memory.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/28/2006 by Neil Archibald (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3706 since 11/16/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20990 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25026), Tenable (20990), SecurityFocus (BID 16907†), OSVDB (23644†) and Secunia (SA19064†). The entries VDB-1918, VDB-26962, VDB-26742 and VDB-26741 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
