fetchmail before 6.3.6-rc4 does not properly enforce TLS and may transmit cleartext passwords over unsecured links if certain circumstances occur, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.

The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2007 by Isaac Wilcox (Website). The advisory is available at fetchmail.berlios.de. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-5867 since 11/14/2006. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at fetchmail.berlios.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24346 (Debian DSA-1259-1 : fetchmail - programming error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
