A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Eric S. Raymond Fetchmail up to 6.3.5. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component TLS Encryption Handler. fetchmail before 6.3.6-rc4 does not properly enforce TLS and may transmit cleartext passwords over unsecured links if certain circumstances occur, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2007 by Isaac Wilcox (Website). The advisory is available at fetchmail.berlios.de. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-5867 since 11/14/2006. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at fetchmail.berlios.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24346 (Debian DSA-1259-1 : fetchmail - programming error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156180 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Fetchmail (ELSA-2007:0018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at developer.berlios.de. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
