Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel. It has been declared as critical. Affected is an unknown function of the file nfs2xdr.c. The manipulation results in symlink. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2005-4798. There is no exploit available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the file nfs2xdr.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in NFS readlink handling in the Linux Kernel 2.4 up to 2.4.31 allows remote NFS servers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a long symlink, which is not properly handled in (1) nfs2xdr.c or (2) nfs3xdr.c and causes a crash in the NFS client.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2005. The weakness was shared 12/31/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-4798 since 05/09/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 110 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22725 (Debian DSA-1183-1 : kernel-source-2.4.27 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117738 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0144)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40729), Tenable (22725), SecurityFocus (BID 20186†), OSVDB (27781†) and Secunia (SA20398†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
