A vulnerability was found in Adobe ColdFusion MX up to 7.0.2 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file CFM File Handler. Adobe ColdFusion MX 7 through 7.0.2, and JRun 4, when run on Microsoft IIS, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files, list directories, or read source code via a double URL-encoded NULL byte in a ColdFusion filename, such as a CFM file.
The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was presented 01/10/2007 by Inge Henriksen with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at labs.idefense.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Adobe. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5858 since 11/10/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24283 (ColdFusion / JRun on IIS Double Encoded NULL Byte Request File Content Disclosure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12344 (Adobe ColdFusion Information Disclosure Vulnerability (APSB07-02)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
