CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-4872. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PCRE 6.1 (Programming Tool Software). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library before 6.2 does not properly count the number of named capturing subpatterns, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a regular expression with a large number of named subpatterns, which triggers a buffer overflow. NOTE: this issue was originally subsumed by CVE-2006-7224, but that CVE has been REJECTED and split.

The weakness was presented 12/31/2005 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-4872. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67610 (Oracle Linux 4 : pcre (ELSA-2007-1052)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165666 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update php4, php5 (SUSE-SA:2008:004)).

Upgrading to version 6.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38858), Tenable (67610), SecurityFocus (BID 26462†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-17140†). See VDB-3287, VDB-3284, VDB-3285 and VDB-3282 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
