Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Oracle Database Server 9.2.0.7/10.1.0.5/10.2.0.1 (Database Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function cdc_allocate_lock of the component Change Data Capture. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Change Data Capture component of Oracle Database server 9.2.0.7, 10.1.0.5, and 10.2.0.1 has unspecified impact and attack vectors, as identified by Oracle Vuln# DB02. NOTE: details are unavailable from Oracle, but they have not publicly disputed a claim by a reliable independent researcher that states that the problem is SQL injection in the CDC_ALLOCATE_LOCK function of the DBMS_CDC_UTILITY package.

The weakness was released 01/17/2006 by Martin with Red-Database-Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0257 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56051 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2006 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19197 (Oracle January Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2006)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24321), Tenable (56051), SecurityFocus (BID 16287†), OSVDB (22540†) and Secunia (SA18493†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1635, VDB-1637, VDB-1638 and VDB-1636. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
