NOTE: based on mutual credits by the relevant sources, it is highly likely that this issue is a buffer overflow in the (a) DBMS_XMLSCHEMA and (b) DBMS_XMLSCHEMA_INT packages, as exploitable via long arguments to (1) XDB.DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.GENERATESCHEMA or (2) XDB.DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.GENERATESCHEMAS.

The weakness was released 01/18/2006 by Martin with Red-Database-Security (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0272 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56051 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2006 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
