Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Oracle9i Standard 9.2.0.7 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Unspecified vulnerability in the XML Database component of Oracle Database server 9.2.0.7 and 10.1.0.4 has unspecified impact and attack vectors, as identified by Oracle Vuln# DB29. NOTE: based on mutual credits by the relevant sources, it is highly likely that this issue is a buffer overflow in the (a) DBMS_XMLSCHEMA and (b) DBMS_XMLSCHEMA_INT packages, as exploitable via long arguments to (1) XDB.DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.GENERATESCHEMA or (2) XDB.DBMS_XMLSCHEMA.GENERATESCHEMAS.
The weakness was released 01/18/2006 by Martin with Red-Database-Security (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0272 since 01/18/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Perl. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56051 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2006 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19197 (Oracle January Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2006)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24321), Tenable (56051), SecurityFocus (BID 16287†), Secunia (SA18493†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015499†).
