A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Help Workshop up to 4.03.0002 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component CNT File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. Stack-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Help Workshop 4.03.0002 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted .cnt file composed of lines that begin with an integer followed by a space and a long string.

The bug was discovered 01/17/2007. The weakness was released 01/22/2007 by porkythepig as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0352 since 01/18/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in C++ and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at anspi.pl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
