A vulnerability was found in NullSoft WinAmp 5.12/5.13 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function strncpy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in Nullsoft Winamp 5.12 and 5.13 allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted .m3u file that causes an incorrect strncpy function call when the player pauses or stops the file.
The weakness was disclosed 02/23/2006 by NSFOCUS with NSFOCUS Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0720. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
