Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.4.5 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in Safari in Mac OS X 10.4.5 and earlier, and 10.3.9 and earlier, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving a web page with crafted JavaScript, a different vulnerability than CVE-2005-4504.
The bug was discovered 03/01/2006. The weakness was presented 03/06/2006 by Ilja van Sprundel (iDefense) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0387 since 01/24/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20990 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115334 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-03-01)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (20990), SecurityFocus (BID 16907†), OSVDB (23637†), Secunia (SA19064†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015713†).
