keras up to 3.7.0 TAR File get_file path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in keras up to 3.7.0 and classified as problematic. Impacted is the function get_file of the component TAR File Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to an unknown weakness. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2024-55459. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in keras up to 3.7.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function get_file of the component TAR File Handler. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue in keras 3.7.0 allows attackers to write arbitrary files to the user's machine via downloading a crafted tar file through the get_file function.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-55459 since 12/06/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 259893 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-55459), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (259893) and EUVD (EUVD-2025-0022). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
